Styro-Roundup: Styrofoam Collection Event on December 28th

On December 28, 2019 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., Kitsap County residents can drop off clean and dry Styrofoam items at a free collection event held at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds Sheep Barn.

If you're planning on coming, here's what you need to know!

Please prepare materials at home
To keep the line moving quickly, we ask that you prepare materials at home:

  • Remove all tape and labels.
  • Make sure materials are clean and dry.
  • Sort materials by color and type.

This event is for Kitsap households only. One carload per home, but we encourage you to ask friends and neighbors if they have foam you can bring for them. No businesses, trailers, or box trucks.

Which foam items are accepted?
Clean and dry foam that breaks into small beads, like:

  • Styrofoam blocks from packaging
  • Shipping coolers
  • Packing peanuts
  • Unstained takeout or meat trays
  • #6 foam or EPS (expanded polystyrene)

packing peanuts

Not accepted?
Other items are not accepted, including:

  • Hot tub covers
  • Soft or flexible foams, EPE (expanded polyethylene)
  • Sealed foam
  • Foil-lined foam
  • Insulation board or spray-in foam
  • Hard plastics (including #6)

no soft foam

What happens to the foam?
Collected materials are sent through a densifier machine to remove the air. Kitsap County doesn't own one of these machines (although we're researching them), so our vendor Styro Recycle LLC currently handles the materials. The compressed foam blocks are then sold to manufacturers of eyeglass frames, picture frames, clothing hangers, and more.
